Washington, DC – Following the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, in which the Court ruled against New York’s requirement that individuals show “proper cause” to carry a concealed firearm, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“It’s unconscionable that in the wake of recent mass tragedies involving firearms, the Supreme Court today took another step to strike down commonsense gun safety regulations. This irresponsible decision paves the way for a genuinely terrifying scenario in which violent people’s ability to roam the streets with concealed weapons is virtually unlimited. It also raises serious concerns that this Court will ultimately go further and undermine a vast array of other gun safety measures. Make no mistake: this ruling will lead to more violence, more maiming and more killing of children and adults from all walks of life – folks like you and me and the people we love. It is a death sentence for innocent Americans whose names are not yet known to us.”
