Washington, DC — Following the U.S. Senate’s vote against changing the rules to facilitate passage of the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act today, President of People For the American Way Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Tonight, all Senate Republicans, aided by two Democrats, turned their backs on the American people. Their decision to reject reforming antiquated Senate rules in order to pass essential voting rights reform is indefensible. They have elevated Senate rules over the most precious of our rights, the right to vote, which is under serious attack in states around the nation, fueled by the Big Lie. Let’s be clear: we are still in the fight against all attempts to silence the voices and votes of Americans across the country. The Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act is an historic set of reforms that addresses many of the pressing challenges that face our democracy. We celebrate those Senators who worked so tirelessly to cross the finish line with this vital legislation, and we will continue to work with them – and their colleagues in the House – to secure these needed reforms. We will not back down in defense of our democracy.”
