Washington, D.C. - As early voting in Virginia’s gubernatorial and state legislative races begins today, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“The stakes could not be higher in the Virginia elections that start today. In the wake of a California recall that was a resounding rejection of Trumpism in our politics, the nation will be watching to see how Virginia voters weigh in on Donald Trump’s continuing influence on our elections. The choice facing Virginians is clear: continue the progress the state is making by electing Terry McAuliffe to the governor’s seat and keeping the state legislature under Democratic leadership, or choose Republicans who will take the state backward on issues from the COVID response, to the economy, health care, and reproductive rights. Fortunately, Virginia has taken great steps recently to make its elections more accessible to more people, including returning citizens, so we’re looking forward to a strong turnout. This election will determine Virginia’s future and set the stage for critical midterms next year.”
