Washington DC – Following today’s vote in the Senate to confirm Judge DeAndrea Benjamin to the U.S. Court of Appeals and action by the Senate Judiciary Committee to advance 24 more of President Biden’s outstanding federal judicial nominees, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“Today, we congratulate Judge DeAndrea Benjamin on her confirmation to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and applaud the progress being made by the Senate Judiciary Committee. We need fair-minded, highly qualified judges like we have seen from the Biden administration to ensure our courts protect all our rights, not just those of the wealthy and powerful. Under the leadership of Judiciary Committee Chair Durbin and Senate Majority Leader Schumer, the Senate has now confirmed Benjamin as only the second woman of color to serve on the Fourth Circuit and the 98th federal judge put on the bench by President Biden. We’re also very excited to see that the last five circuit court judges to be confirmed are African American women. It’s essential that we continue to prioritize rebuilding our courts, diversifying the federal bench, and advancing judicial nominees to confirmation, now and through the end of the year.”
