Washington, DC— As the House today takes an important step forward with the introduction of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, People For President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Today, we are pleased to see the House reintroduce the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act—vital legislation that honors the legacy of Lewis by protecting our voting rights and ensuring that all Americans have an equal say in our future. House consideration of this legislation could not come at a more urgent time as we continue seeing some of the most severe attacks on voting rights since the original Jim Crow era. It is time for Congress to take action and stop the suppression spreading through Republican-controlled state houses across the country. We urge swift passage in the House and the Senate of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act as well as Senate passage of the For the People Act. Time is of the essence. If Republicans continue to stand in opposition, then the filibuster must be abolished.”
