Washington, D.C. – Following the advancement and confirmation of more federal judicial nominees this week, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“The Biden administration and the Senate continue to set an outstanding pace for judicial confirmations, with 66 lifetime federal judges now confirmed – the highest number at this point in a presidency since the Kennedy administration.  President Biden has been filling our courts with individuals who have deep and demonstrated commitments to civil rights. Judges confirmed this week include Stephanie Dawkins Davis, the first Black woman from Michigan to serve on the Sixth Circuit bench, and Charlotte Sweeney, the first openly LGBTQ+ federal judge in Colorado. Nominees who advanced include five outstanding women of color, Nancy Abudu, Nusrat Choudhury, Natasha Merle, Ana de Alba and Michelle Childs.  We applaud Senate Majority Leader Schumer and Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Durbin for their tireless work in confirming these outstanding nominees and will continue to look for the nomination and confirmation of diverse nominees, including more nominees from historically underrepresented groups.”
