Washington, DC—Following today’s action in the Senate Judiciary Committee that will advance the nominations of Ketanji Brown Jackson for a seat on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and Candace Jackson-Akiwumi for a seat on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson and Candace Jackson-Akiwumi are both eminently qualified to serve at the federal appellate level. Their outstanding professional credentials include experience as public defenders, which enriches and deepens their understanding of our justice system and how it affects real people and families. It's unfortunate that most Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee keep trying to score political points by opposing these nominees who are highly accomplished women of color. We applaud the committee for moving forward with these nominations and look forward to seeing these two exceptional nominees confirmed.”
