Washington, D.C. - Following Senate Republicans’ action to once again block debate on the For the People Act, and the announcement that the House will return earlier than planned on August 23 to take up voting rights, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:
“We’ve reached a pivotal moment for voting rights in our country. Senate Republicans just made it clear beyond any doubt that they will not even debate meaningful voting rights legislation, let alone support it. Now Democrats can and must move forward whether the GOP caucus comes along or not. Senate Majority Leader Schumer plans to make voting rights a top priority when the Senate returns next month, and the House will return this month and will take up the John Lewis Voting Rights Act at that time. Both are essential to protecting our democracy. President Biden must also step up and unequivocally throw his support and the power of his office behind removal of the filibuster as an obstacle to progress on these measures. This is the turning point and there can be no more excuses: it’s time to get this done.”
