WASHINGTON, D.C.—People For the American Way today released an online report, “Holding Attorney General Barr to His Promises,” detailing the commitments made by William Barr during his appearances before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Barr’s nomination to be the next Attorney General of the United States was approved by the Senate on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019.

The report details the commitments made by Barr to the committee in the areas of:

  • The Mueller investigation into Russian election interference;
  • Avoiding politics and improper influence from the White House;
  • Criminal justice;
  • Voting and elections;
  • Other civil rights issues;
  • Congressional oversight;
  • Antitrust; and
  • Other laws in which the Justice Department has responsibility, including the Affordable Care Act.

“We noted a number of commitments Barr failed to give when stating our opposition to his nomination as attorney general, but now that he has been confirmed, it’s critical to hold him accountable for promises he made as part of that confirmation process,” PFAW Executive Vice President Marge Baker said. “Barr’s commitments to the committee covered a wide swath of important issues under the Justice Department’s purview, and making sure he lives up to those commitments will be essential to protecting the public interest.”
