The People For the American Way and People For the American Way Foundation boards today announced that business executive, philanthropist, and longtime board member Michael Keegan would become interim president of both organizations. Former President Kathryn Kolbert is leaving the organizations.
"I have known Michael for more than twenty-two years and know that he's a first rate leader and activist. He shares my love of this country and my pride in People For's work," said Norman Lear, founder and co-chairman of People For the American Way Foundation. "I'm extremely excited to work with him in this new capacity."
"Our country faces enormous challenges," said James Autry, chair of People For the American Way, "but we also have a tremendous opportunity to protect and expand the rights and liberties at the heart of the American Way. People For will continue to champion the values that make this country great."
Keegan has an extensive background in business and progressive activism. He previously worked for Columbia Pictures and Act III Communications, and was a founding national board member of The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD.) He has been on the People For board since 1994 and has been an active participant on all the key board committees overseeing the program activities of the organization.
"People For has always been close to my heart, and I look forward to the opportunity to participate in a more hands-on way," said Keegan. "I look forward to working with People For's excellent staff in the weeks and months ahead."
