The House Administration Committee today approved an amended version of the DISCLOSE Act, a bill aimed at blunting the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. FEC.

Michael B. Keegan, President of People For the American Way, issued the following statement:

“By approving the DISCLOSE Act, The House Administration Committee has taken an important step toward restoring democracy and transparency to our electoral process.

“With its decision in Citizens United v. FEC, the Supreme Court upended a century of established law to give corporations sweeping new powers to influence elections. While a constitutional amendment will be the only way to truly fix the damage done by Citizens United, the passage of the DISCLOSE Act will help to mitigate some of the harm as we head into the upcoming elections.

“We urge the House and Senate to resist pressure to water down the DISCLOSE Act, and to quickly pass a bill that will help restore transparency and fairness to federal elections.”
