While the media discuss the political implications of Mike Huckabee’s win in the Iowa Republican caucuses, it’s clear there are some other winners: far-right activists intent on packing the Supreme Court with ultra-conservative ideologues. The losers are Americans whose rights and legal protections are already being weakened by the High Court.

Whether it is Romney or Huckabee or McCain who wins the Republican nomination for President – or even Giuliani – the nation will still face a candidate who has pledged to appoint ultra-conservative justices to the Supreme Court.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee called Antonin Scalia "my hero on the court" while former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney says "I think the justices that President Bush has appointed are exactly spot-on." McCain too cites Scalia as a member of the Court he particularly admires.

As election season heats up, voters need to know about how the presidential candidates would affect the future of the Supreme Court. According to CNN, the next president could appoint three or more justices to the Court. For more information on how the 2008 elections can affect the Supreme Court, visit www.TakeBackTheCourt.org.
