Washington D.C. – As the Supreme Court opens its new term on the traditional first Monday in October, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“This year’s First Monday is historic on many levels, not just because of the significant cases we already know the Supreme Court will hear this term, but because of a giant question mark hanging over the presidential race: will Donald Trump try to use the Court to swing the election? As the Court begins its term we have deep concerns about what the MAGA justices might do not just in a possible election case but in a whole range of cases on critical issues like transgender equality, gun safety, and civil rights. This is why it’s never been more important to keep the courts in mind when we vote this fall, to prevent Donald Trump from naming any more MAGA extremists to the federal bench. We’re also calling on Congress to pass urgently needed reforms to help restore trust in all our courts, including our highest Court.”
