We always knew that the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s 2018 probe into the multiple allegations of sexual assault against now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh was a sham.
Now, the FBI has responded to an official inquiry from Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Chris Coons into the FBI’s truncated and opaque investigation during Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court. Their response raises more questions than it answers and suggests that the Trump administration inappropriately controlled the bureau’s investigation.
It is more clear than ever that the corrupt Trump administration was pulling the strings during this deeply flawed investigation and may very well have prevented leads from being followed and witnesses from being interviewed.
We need answers: Were the more than four thousand tips related to Kavanaugh and received on the FBI’s tip line ever investigated? Were important witnesses – including Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Kavanaugh himself – not interviewed by the FBI as a result of orders from the White House? The Senate has a duty to expose and remedy any abuses that occurred by conducting its own examination.
We may have a different administration now, but that doesn’t erase the harm that was done during Kavanaugh’s confirmation process (and by putting him on the bench). The best path now is for the Senate to uncover the truth and make sure that nothing like this corrupt process can ever happen again. Together, we’re going to hold accountable anyone who tried to bury Kavanaugh’s past.
Believe women. Believe survivors.
