June 1 marks the first-ever national day of action in support of the rights of sex workers, with advocates from across the country speaking out against policies that could put their safety and even survival at risk.
In the June 1 episode of “The Progressive Happy Hour,” co-hosts Christin “Cici” Battle and Drew Courtney sat down with Kate D’Adamo, a community organizer for sex workers’ rights, to learn more about what’s at stake.
“It’s a really important issue because when you’re talking about criminalizing sex work, often you’re talking about criminalizing survival for the most marginalized in all of our communities,” Kate explained. “You’re talking about criminalizing the way that people are keeping roofs over their head—the way that people are staying off of the street…Whatever your feelings are on prostitution, what we’re talking about is people’s survival.”
Kate noted that sex worker rights is an issue that intersects with a number of other critical issues, including LGBTQ rights and violence against women.
