Last week marked an historic milestone in the movement to create a more equitable and just democracy. H.R. 1, the For the People Act, passed the House Wednesday night (March 3rd), with 220 Democrats voting in favor. This landmark legislation contains a sweeping set of reforms to address numerous threats facing our democracy such as voter suppression, gerrymandering and big money in politics. If signed into law it would be the most transformative set of reforms to our democracy seen in at least a generation.
To celebrate the occasion and raise awareness, People For the American Way and our partners at the Declaration for American Democracy coalition organized a five-hour livestream, which featured nearly two dozen speakers including policy experts discussing various pieces of this far reaching legislation, as well as several members of Congress including Senator Klobuchar (D-MN), Senator Merkley (D-OR), Representative Sarbanes (D-MD-03), Representative Jones (D-NY-17), Representative McBath (D-GA-07), Representative Price (D-NC-03) and Representative Haaland (D-NM-01).
People For Senior Campaign Manager Rio Tazewell served as one of the co-hosts of the event, helping to anchor the second half of the broadcast.
