After a "frightening" first few weeks in office for President Trump, Shevrin Jones, who represents District 101 in the Florida State House, was troubled by his pick of Judge Neil Gorsuch to serve on the Supreme Court. On Friday, an op-ed from Jones appeared in the Sun Sentinel calling on Senator Bill Nelson to join the powerful #StopGorsuch movement and stand strong in opposition to this dangerous nominee. Speaking as a criminal justice reform advocate, Jones cited Judge Gorsuch's disturbing ruling in an excessive force case. But he didn't stop there.
Jones wrote:
So much hangs in the balance with this nominee; the future of civil rights, voting rights, immigration, women's rights, consumer protections — this is not a fight we can lose or back away from. And as the last week has shown us, courts matter. We need an independent Supreme Court that performs the healthy checks and balances our democracy requires. We don't want an ideological pick who will only serve as a rubber stamp for the president and his overreaches.
