The NRA's Wayne LaPierre spoke at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference today, where he blamed Barack Obama for allowing the Democratic Party to be taken over the "European-style socialists" who refuse to work with the NRA to implement "common-sense" solutions to ending gun violence such as eliminating gun-free zones and "hardening schools."
LaPierre railed against "the shameful politicization" of the recent mass shooting at a Florida high school by "a poisonous movement" that seeks to exploit gun violence for political gain.
LaPierre said that during "the Obama decade," pro-Second Amendment Democrats "have been forced out as a tidal wave of new, European-style socialists seized control of the Democratic Party. Obama promised a fundamental transformation of our country, and you know what? It began with his own national party, a party that is now infested with saboteurs who don't believe in capitalism, don't believe in the Constitution, don't believe in our freedom and don't believe in America as we know it."
"They hide behind labels like ‘Democrat,’ ‘left-wing’ and ‘progressive’ to make their socialist agenda more palatable," he added, "and that is terrifying."
