Tom DeLay, the former House Republican majority leader, appeared on Newsmax TV today to denounce President Obama’s pledge to reestablish ties with Cuba and the his swap of three convicted Cuban agents for imprisoned American contractor Alan Gross, an American intelligence agent, and Cuba’s promise to release of dozens more political prisoners.
“This is surrender,” DeLay said. “This is a president who is a socialist to begin with reaching out to his socialist friends and opening up relationships with one of the most oppressive regimes in the world. The only worse one I can think of right now is North Korea.”
DeLay later insisted that Obama wants to “surrender to them” as a way to punish Cuban Americans for disproportionately voting Republican: “Frankly, I think this could also be payback by Obama to those Cubans who normally support Republicans.”
