Religious Right leaders have declared that President Trump was anointed by God, that his election was the result of divine intervention to save America, and that the 2018 midterm elections will determine whether Trump’s presidency survives. They have mobilized armies of prayer warriors on behalf of Trump and Trump-supporting candidates in this year’s midterm elections. And now a group of them are planning a pre-Election Day gathering ostentatiously called “The Event,” which they’re describing as “a live simulcast for the sake of America.”
The Event is being sponsored by the Family Research Council, conservative evangelical voter turnout operation United in Purpose, and Andrew Wommack Ministries and its Truth and Liberty Coalition. It will be held at Charis Bible College—“an extension of Andrew Wommack Ministries”—near Colorado Springs, and will be simulcast to churches and other host locations around the country.
In addition to Wommack, who has said opposition to Trump is demonic and a sign of the End Times, speakers include some powerful Religious Right figures such as FRC President Tony Perkins and Alliance Defending Freedom President Michael Farris, along with Students for Life President Kristan Hawkins, pundit Mike Huckabee and failed Senate candidate E.W. Jackson, who earlier this year launched a campaign denouncing the Democratic Party and George Soros and urging Christians to vote for Republicans.
“America is moving in the right direction,” says the video promoting the event, citing a list of accomplishments that sounds like a White House press release. Among the things it celebrates are tax cuts, the shrinking of “government overreach,” the U.S. embassy’s move to Jerusalem, and new judges—highlighted with photos of Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh at their swearing-in ceremonies.
“The midterm elections are coming,” says the video’s narrator. “You can join millions of Christians together for one night. Learn how we can keep our nation moving in the right direction.”
The Truth and Liberty Coalition describes itself this way:
Truth & Liberty is an initiative birthed by Andrew Wommack and other notable ministry leaders to establish and catalyze a movement that promotes the true reformation and flourishing of nations through the teachings of Jesus Christ, and empower His people by providing them content, cohesion and direction.
Truth & Liberty hosts a weekly livecast that has promoted Christian nationalist David Barton and “prophet” and promoter of 7 Mountains dominionism Lance Wallnau. On the October 8 telecast, anti-choice activist Marjorie Dannenfelser described opposition to Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation as “breathtaking evil” and described anti-Kavanaugh protesters as angry women who were “willing to blame him for all the past crimes of all men and all future crimes of all men.”
In a June webcast, Wommack and Barton discussed 7 Mountains dominionism and Wommack declared that Christians are meant to “have dominion” over the earth because “we are unique in that we are not only in relationship with God in dealing with eternal things, but we are supposed to be ruling in this world.”
