Former Arkansas governor and two-time Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee distinguished himself in the 2016 GOP primary by having what might have been the most radical anti-choice policy stance in a radically anti-choice field of candidates. Huckabee repeatedly insisted that no constitutional amendment or Supreme Court decision is needed in order to recriminalize abortion in the country, saying that the president could simply “invoke the Fifth and 14th Amendments” in order to outlaw abortion by executive fiat.
Huckabee is still at it, saying in an interview on the Family Research Council’s “Washington Watch” radio program yesterday that “we really don’t have to pass a new constitutional amendment or reinterpret it to protect human life.” Huckabee told guest host Ronnie Floyd:
Frankly, I think, and this is something I talked about during the campaign, we really don’t have to pass a new constitutional amendment or reinterpret it to protect human life. We just have to apply the two amendments we already have, the Fifth and 14th Amendment, that guarantee that no person can be deprived of life or liberty without due process. An abortion deprives a person of life or liberty without any due process, and at some point we need to invoke that and make it very clear that we will protect every human.
