Matt Walsh, a contributor to Ben Shapiro’s right-wing news outlet The Daily Wire, argued on Twitter and said in a podcast today that a rape victim should be subject to anti-abortion laws that would require them to give birth to a child conceived during the assault.
Walsh had argued his same point on Twitter yesterday in reaction to Alabama’s recently passed anti-abortion law that included no exception for victims of incest or rape, which prompted enough people to criticize him that Twitter briefly identified his name as a trending topic. During a podcast for The Daily Wire this morning, Walsh doubled down against his critics and elaborated on why he believed rape victims, even those as young as 12 years old, should be required to give birth after being impregnated by their assailants.
“Rapists use abortion to cover their tracks,” Walsh asserted. “Abortion restrictions can actually protect rape victims, whereas abortion clinics often exploit rape victims and can cause rape to continue.”
Walsh argued that terminating the hypothetical pregnancy of a 12-year-old girl who was raped by her father would destroy evidence of the crime, which is simply untrue, and argued that by having a baby, the crime would be exposed.
“Do I apologize for making this point? No, no, I do not, not even a little bit. I’m not ever going to apologize for saying something that’s true,” Walsh said.
Thankfully, he doesn’t have to. His assertion is wildly absurd and not based in any coherent reality.
