Owen Shroyer, a host of the show “War Room” on Alex Jones’ Infowars network, asserted that media organizations that give positive coverage to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are “partly responsible for the death of Heather Heyer,” a counter-protester who was murdered by a neo-Nazi at the 2017 Unite the Right white supremacist gathering.
Right-wing media have been in the midst of a months-long tantrum over Ocasio-Cortez’s early political career, tossing out every conceivable smear in the right-wing playbook to seemingly no avail. Ocasio-Cortez’s dismantling of the attempted smears with seeming ease, paired with her unapologetically progressive message, has earned her positive media attention since her swearing-in to Congress.
And Shroyer isn’t happy about that.
“Sandy @AOC Cortez flares her nostrils and gets more media attention than a sitting Congressman @SteveScalise being shot by a radicalized left-wing terrorist,” Shroyer said, apparently forgetting the wall-to-wall coverage that Rep. Steve Scalise’s shooting received. “The same media that gives AOC all the positive attention is the reason why the shooter was radicalized.”
“If a deeper truth be told, the same media is partly responsible for the death of Heather Heyer. Drumming up the Trump hysteria which manufactured that scenario,” Shroyer wrote.

James Fields, a neo-Nazi who was recently convicted of first-degree murder, killed Heyer by driving his car into a crowd of counter-protesters. Trump infamously failed to denounce Fields and the other white supremacists that had gathered in Charlottesville that day. The Federal Bureau of Investigation determined that the man who shot Scalise acted spontaneously.
Infowars is one of many conservative media outlets that claim that white supremacists do not exist in America while simultaneously serving as a gateway into the ideology.
