Rep. Louie Gohmert was a guest on the "Point Of View" radio program on Friday where he and host Penna Dexter discussed a recent column in the New York Times noting that Christian positions on issues such as slavery and gender roles have changed dramatically over the centuries and advocating that a similar ideological shift must take place on the issue of gay marriage.
The Texas congressman, of course, was not persuaded, declaring that the Scripture is clear that homosexuality is a sin and today, Christians who stand by the position are being "abused and misused."
America was founded by Christians who were seeking to escape persecution, Gohmert said, "and ended up with giving us the freest nation, until more recently, as people try to take our freedoms away."
"They came to avoid persecution for being Christians," he said. "Look where we are today. Now it is really Christians are the only group in America that it is politically correct to abuse and misuse":
