Doug Mainwaring, an openly gay Tea Party activist who is a favorite among Religious Right activists for his denunciations of marriage equality, appeared yesterday on The Janet Mefferd Show to warn that families led by same-sex couples are “not humane” to children, saying that he got back together with his ex-wife even though he is gay over fears for his kids.
“To be dismissive of half the human race because of a little sexual predilection isn’t right,” he said.
He also said that the pharmaceutical and medical industries are “going to be very supportive” of marriage equality laws in order create a “huge revenue stream” of same-sex couples looking to have children: “Really it’s about money when you come down to it.”
The National Capital Tea Party Patriots leader added that progressives are promoting marriage equality in order to “water down the influence of faith” and “weaken biological family ties,” allowing them to grow the size of government.
“If they can get rid of those two things that are such a strong buffer between each individual and the government,” he argued, “then the government is eventually is going to be able to have its way with them.”
Mainwaring may have wanted to listen to the next hour of Mefferd’s show where she said during a discussion of World Vision’s decision to recognize its gay employees’ marriages that “unrepentant homosexuals” can’t go to Heaven.
