On his "Pass The Salt Live" webcast on Friday, Religious Right activist Dave Daubenmire complained that people can call him "diminutive" or "fat" but that he can’t call a black person the N-word, asserting that the former are far more offensive than the latter.
"I shouldn't even have to worry about what I say for fear that I'm going to offend somebody racially," Daubenmire complained. "What a bunch of crap that is."
"They call it 'the N-word,'" he continued. "Have you ever heard of anything more stupid than that? The N-word? What is the N-word? Well, the N-word is where they call somebody nigger."
Daubenmire then proceeded to look up the word "niggardly" in a version of the dictionary from 1828, as well as the word "nigger." When the latter was not found, Daubenmire wrongly concluded not that the word was simply not included in that dictionary but that the word did not exist at that time and is, instead, a recent creation coined for some sort of nefarious purpose.
"Do you see what they've done to us with words?" he asked. "I wonder where that came from? I wonder who's idea that was? Jiminy criminy."
Daubenmire then recalled that when he was in high school decades ago, an article was written in a local newspaper in which he was referred to as "diminutive Daubenmire," which he thinks is a greater insult than being called the N-word.
"You know what? I'd a rather they called me a nigger," Daubenmire said. "I didn't look at myself as small! What do you mean small? Why are they able to get away with that? Why can they call me small? Why can they call me fat? Why can they call me hick? And I can't say nigger? I can't say the N-word? Oh no! Do you see what they've done to us?"
