Alex Marlow and John Carney, editors at Breitbart News, largely dismissed news that adult film actress Stephanie Clifford—known by her screen name Stormy Daniels—has sued President Trump in an effort to nullify a “hush agreement” meant to conceal her alleged affair with him.
On “Breitbart News Daily” this morning, Carney, who is Breitbart’s economics and finance editor, joined editor-in-chief Marlow to discuss Trump’s recently proposed tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, which have drawn widespread criticism from many in the Republican Party and triggered Trump’s economic adviser Gary Cohn’s resignation.
But before discussing tariffs, Marlow and Carney riffed on news that Clifford had filed a lawsuit aimed at unbinding her from an agreement preventing her from discussing the details of her alleged affair with Trump in 2006. Clifford claims that the nondisclosure agreement she signed is invalid because Trump did not sign it.
“They came up with some agreement over an alleged affair for her to keep quiet—again, hugely embarrassing for the president if you care about such things. I don’t think it really affects his ability to govern all that much,” Marlow said.
Marlow went on to doubt that Clifford would be able to repay the $130,000 involved in the “hush agreement” if it is ruled invalid—despite the fact that Clifford’s lawyer has implied otherwise—and suggested the whole lawsuit is a publicity stunt.
Marlow asked Carney: “Did we just fall for a trap here because she’s a porn star and she’s just trying to get attention?”
“I think that’s exactly what this is,” Carney said.
Carney affirmed it was likely that Clifford would be required to return the $130,000 “hush agreement” money, and also doubted her willingness to do so.
“I think this is going to be one of those cases that she has decided that she really liked the attention she was getting and so I assumed she decided she wants to continue to get that kind of attention. She’s got herself back in the news and I don’t blame her. It’s her right as a person to want to get her celebrity out there if she really wants to do this sort of thing,” Carney said.
Carney said he didn’t doubt that Trump and Clifford had a relationship but that Trump “probably should have kept his distance from this woman.”
