Bill Mitchell, an online conspiracy theorist and staunch defender of President Trump, spent the weeks leading up to the midterm elections tweeting endlessly that a "red wave" was going to sweep the nation, and repeatedly guaranteeing that the GOP would retain control of the House:

That did not happen, and Mitchell has an explanation: The voters are insane.
On yesterday's episode of his "YourVoice America" program, Mitchell asserted that he had mistakenly believed that most Americans were rational people, but the fact that lots of them voted for Democratic candidates was evidence that he had been mistaken.
"I famously—or infamously, at this point—guaranteed that we would hold the House and that we would grow our lead in the Senate," Mitchell said. "The reason why I made that guarantee was that I was using a recipe that actually included rationality as one of the ingredients, not insanity as one of the ingredients."
After rattling off a long list of Trump's supposedly amazing accomplishments, Mitchell couldn't help but be baffled by the fact that "in some of these districts, you had people that are going back and pulling the lever for Democrats."
"It just boggles the mind," he said. "I made that prediction because I just was working under the assumption that people were at least rational ... [Democrats] were able to win back 27 seats in the House, they won seven governorships. I'm sorry, the governorship of Kansas? Are you kidding me? I don't know if there was cheating going on—I don't know what went on but some of it was just inexplicable."
