In 1965, John Lewis was one of the civil rights marchers beaten by police on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. He got a skull fracture. He was arrested more than 40 times protesting Jim Crow laws. Now Lewis is a Democratic congressman and one of the strongest voices for civil rights in Congress.
Today, Lewis testified against the nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama to be attorney general. Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the anti-immigrant group Center for Immigration Studies—a group that has worked with Sessions on immigration issues—had this to say in response:
