Obama has cited "Cousin Pookie" since at least 2008, as Mediaite explained, "as a means [of] energizing minority communities that may not be as inclined to vote as others" but this latest incident seems to have outraged Alveda King, who says she is "very disturbed" by it.

"I think President Obama has anointed Al Sharpton. Well, for me, God has anointed Jesus of Nazareth," she said. "And that's who my uncle Martin Luther King, Jr. served and my daddy A.D. King and Daddy King, my grandaddy. Read 'King Rules,' my book."
"So to bring up 'Cousin Pookie' as if that could give us solutions to these terrible problems, I'm very disturbed about that reference," King stated:
