On his television show last night, Glenn Beck continued his campaign to convince conservatives to abandon the Republican Party after he was reportedly snubbed by Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus.
As Beck explained it, Priebus had scheduled a meeting with Beck several weeks ago, only to blow him off after Beck's preferred candidate, Ted Cruz, dropped out of the presidential race, which Beck took as proof that the GOP has no interest in making any effort to reach out to conservatives in the party and is, instead, simply ordering them to fall in line and support Donald Trump.
Beck, of course, is having none of it, telling his audience last night to leave the party.
"The first thing that has to happen is you need to say, 'Republicans, I'm done with you. You're not doing anything to earn my vote,'" Beck said. "And you know this is true. You know this is true! They're ashamed to stand with you. They're ashamed of the pro-lifers, they're ashamed of the religious people. Look at how the religious people, me in particular and Ted Cruz, were handled from the Republican Party from the get-go. They don't like you bringing God up. They're ashamed of people who believe in God. They're ashamed of people who actually believe in the Constitution."
The Republicans have ignored conservatives for years, Beck said, and so it's time for conservatives to leave the party.
Interestingly, late last night, after spending all day trashing the GOP, Beck posted a message on his Facebook page suggesting that it was all a big misunderstanding:
Today, I blasted the RNC for reaching out to spend time with me, making it seem like it was a real priority, and then, ‘coincidentally’ not following up after Senator Cruz dropped out. After the show, it became known that there was a misunderstanding. I think my staff (and I) jumped to conclusions that were unfair to them.
As you all know, I trust virtually no one in politics. So when I feel someone is using me to get to you, my audience, my shields go up. The RNC assures me that their goal in trying to set up a meeting was to build a bridge between our respective organizations – nothing more and nothing less. We will agree on some things, disagree on others but we don’t have to be disagreeable. I look forward to sitting down with Reince, whenever that is, and see where we can find common ground and look forward to him addressing our great audience.
As always, we will strive to do better tomorrow.
