Mat Staver is the founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, a Religious Right legal group that is associated with Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University. Until 2014, Staver served as the dean of Liberty University School of Law.
At the Orlando-based Liberty Counsel, which he founded in 1989, Staver works to amplify cases of what he claims is the persecution of conservative Christians in America. He gained national notoriety in 2015 when he defended Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk Kim Davis, who refused to allow her office to issue marriage licenses in the wake of the Supreme Court’s landmark marriage equality decision. Staver compared Davis' plight to that of a Jew living in Nazi Germany. Staver has a long history of anti-LGBT rhetoric, much of it shared on his daily "Faith and Freedom" radio program.
