At town hall events all over the country, Republican members of Congress have been confronted by irate constituents outraged over the Trump administration's reckless efforts to dismantle the federal government and undermine the Constitution.
The events have become so contentious that Speaker Mike Johnson advised House members to simply stop holding them, thereby eliminating the need for Republicans to explain why they have been fecklessly allowing President Donald Trump and his appointees to run roughshod over the government.
But that is not the tale that Johnson is telling the faithful. This weekend, Johnson appeared on "This Week On Capitol Hill," hosted by Christian nationalist political leader Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, where Johnson declared that there is "euphoria" among Americans everywhere he goes.
"Let's talk about what you're hearing as you're out there campaigning across the country," said Perkins.
"I'm going to all the states and everywhere we go, Tony, there's euphoria," Johnson claimed. "People are excited. From your average voter to moms and dads who are now feeling freedom again being that we're turning the tide, you've got business owners at every level—large and small—who are making decisions to expand business and they know that help is on the way and it's already begun and they feel good about it."
"There's a real sense of excitement, patriotism, people just have this sense of relief," Johnson continued, "and it's a fun thing to go out and talk about and share on the campaign trail."
If it's so much fun for Republicans to be out there meeting with voters, as Johnson claims, then why are so many of them conspicuously avoiding attending town hall events with their own constituents?
