Dusty Deevers Says 'The Chief End Of Government' Is Submission to Christ

Dusty Deevers

Oklahoma state Sen. Dusty Deevers is a far-right pastor and unabashed Christian nationalist who wants to abolish abortion, ban no-fault divorce, outlaw pornography, and literally see this nation taken back to the 1600s.

Recently, Deevers preached at Christ Church in Moscow, Idaho, which is run by far-right Christian nationalist pastor Douglas Wilson. During his sermon, Deevers laid out his view that the "chief end" of government is to lead people to Jesus Christ for the salvation of their souls.

"The point of Matthew 28 and the Great Commission is that in his mediatorial rule, Christ rules by his spirit and word through his earthly agents who he divinely commissioned to execute his will on Earth to orient humankind toward himself, through preaching the Gospel, making disciples, living holy lives, and teaching all nations to obey everything that he commanded in Scripture in every sphere," Deevers declared. "No retreating. Every sphere is his sphere, and it's yours to extend his dominion in."

Civil leaders, Deevers declared, are to serve as "Christ's deacons" on Earth and therefore their primary duty is to "know their master and submit to his authority."

"This is the chief end of government: joy in Christ and justice in the land," Deevers said. "Further, in Romans 13, Christ ordains autonomous national governments. God identifies all civil authorities as his servants or his deacons. Deacons of what? Well, deacons of his justice for joy. All authority is delegated from Christ to his deacons for his purposes, his glory, and the joy of his people. So what is the duty, then, of these civil authorities? As Christ's deacons, acting within the bounds of his moral law, the activities and roles of civil authorities is to know their master and submit to his authority."

In 2023, Deevers was among the contributors to a document called “The Statement on Christian Nationalism and the Gospel." Drafted by Christian nationalists like far-right pastor Joel Webbon, former Trump administration official William Wolfe, and others, the document declared that the United States must formally “acknowledge the Lordship of Christ” in all its laws, “abolish abortion,” outlaw marriage equality, and “recapture our national sovereignty from godless, global entities who present a grave threat to civilization.”
