Is Project 2025 real? Yes – and it’s a real danger to real people.

Project 2025 is getting a lot of attention. That’s a good thing. Project 2025 is a dangerous plan by MAGA movement leaders and organizations to give a future President Trump unchecked power and make Americans less free and less safe. The more Americans know about the destructive and authoritarian Project 2025, the more they’re motivated to stop it in its tracks.

We’re proud that People For the American Way’s Right Wing Watch was among the first to sound the alarm about Project 2025. And we won’t stop telling the truth about the risks it poses to our democracy—and to Americans’ health, well-being, and access to opportunity.

Project 2025’s 900+ page agenda is ideologically aligned with the Trump campaign’s own Agenda 47 and with the much shorter Republican Party Platform that Trump’s team wrote and rammed through the platform committee.

What would Project 2025 do?

  • Undermine checks and balances and give Trump and future presidents dictatorial control over federal agencies;
  • turn law enforcement agencies into weapons for presidents to use against personal enemies and political opponents;
  • replace tens of thousands of civil servants with scientific or other expertise with people chosen for their political loyalty and willingness to follow orders without question;
  • undermine the federal government’s ability to protect workers, consumers, communities, and the environment from corporate wrongdoing;
  • abolish efforts to extend educational and economic opportunity to people who have been left out;
  • use government power to impose a Christian nationalist agenda, eliminating access to abortion and reproductive care, undermining equality for LGBTQ Americans, and more.

Who would Project 2025 hurt?

  • Women and families facing decisions about pregnancy and abortion

Project 2025 would limit families’ options by making it government policy to protect fertilized eggs from the moment of conception, threatening access to abortion and birth control, and making it a crime for doctors to provide abortion medication. It would ban health clinics that receive federal Title X funding from distributing condoms.

  • Veterans

Project 2025 is “the worst-case scenario for veterans,” according to one vet leader. Veterans make up about 30 percent of the federal workforce, many of them working in agencies that Project 2025 targets, such as the FBI. Project 2025’s plan to slash a million federal jobs not only undermines government’s ability to perform essential tasks, but threatens the livelihoods of tens of thousands of veterans.”

  • Voters

Project 2025 would forbid the federal government from taking action against the spread of disinformation about voting and elections. It would take investigations of voting irregularities—like Trump’s false claims about voter fraud—away from the Justice Department’s civil rights division and turn them over to the criminal division, which could target voter registration groups and election officials.

  • Workers who depend on overtime

Project 2025 would gut requirements for overtime pay and make it easier for companies to classify workers as independent contractors who have fewer legal protections than employees. It would also weaken workers’ ability to organize.

  • Parents with young children

Project 2025 calls for an end to Head Start. It also calls for defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and ending NPR stations’ classification of noncommercial education stations.

  • LGBTQ+ Americans

Project 2025 calls for using the power of the federal government to “maintain a biblically based, social science–reinforced definition of marriage and family.” It would do away with policies that protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination, and even eliminate the terms “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” from government records and policies.

  • People who use libraries

Project 2025 calls for more government control over what people can see and read. It calls for outlawing whatever government officials define as pornography and threatens to classify librarians who defend the freedom to read as sex offenders.

  • Anyone who values personal freedom

Project 2025 says you only have freedom to live according to its authors’ religious worldview: “Our Constitution grants each of us the liberty to do not what we want, but what we ought.”

  • People who have faced job or housing discrimination

Project 2025 would essentially criminalize both public and private efforts to expand educational and economic opportunity by treating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs as illegal discrimination. It would repeal protections against racial discrimination in housing and make it easier to sell off public housing to private developers.

  • People who depend on Medicare and Medicaid for their healthcare.

Project 2025 calls for lifetime caps on Medicare, threatening millions of Americans who have serious health problems. Project 2025 would eliminate caps on out-of-pocket drug costs and forbid Medicare from negotiating lower drug prices.

  • Public school students

Project 2025 would abolish the Department of Education, cut funding for school meals, and phase out federal funding for schools that serve low-income communities. Many discussions of race and gender would be banned.

  • Immigrants and their families and communities

Project 2025 leader are promising of reign of terror against undocumented immigrants, with massive arrests, detentions, and expulsions. Legal immigration and asylum would be restricted.

  • Anyone living on Planet Earth

Project 2025 would eliminate and reverse every government action to address climate change, which is already costing lives through more extreme weather patterns. That’s why one columnist calls it a “blueprint for destroying the planet.” It would also gut the Environmental Protection Agency and make regulation of dangerous chemicals more industry-friendly.
