In response to the revelation of the identity of the woman who has lodged allegations of sexual assault against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement:

“Today’s developments demonstrate the need to halt the flawed, utterly non-transparent process for considering the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court. Senators need to have – and the American public deserve – a fair and open process for considering whether Judge Kavanaugh is fit to be confirmed. That includes a fair process for investigating the serious sexual assault allegations that have been lodged, and one in which the survivor is assured the respect and the protections she deserves as a private citizen. It’s been deeply disturbing to watch senate leaders brush aside the need for Kavanaugh’s full record and dismiss the clear evidence that he lied under oath to the Judiciary Committee. Refusing to halt this process until these serious allegations can be investigated would be unforgivable.”
