WASHINGTON, D.C. — In celebration of People For the American Way board member Dolores Huerta's 90th birthday, People For the American Way President Michael Keegan released the following statement:
“We are excited to celebrate the first 90 years of our dear friend and People For the American Way board member Dolores Huerta on her birthday. The name Dolores Huerta has become a synonym for 'organizing.' She has been a tireless leader in the fight for labor rights and civil rights for everyone. For over six decades she has worked non-stop to improve the social and economic conditions of workers and her activism has greatly improved the lives of the Latino community, LGBTQ Americans, young progressive leaders and so many others across the nation. She is truly inspiring as one of the most effective civil rights leaders of our time. We wish her a happy birthday and continued success in the fight for justice.”
More about Dolores Huerta: Dolores Huerta co-founded the National Farmworkers Association along with Cesar Chavez and created the “Si se puede” chant. She’s received numerous awards and honors over her lifetime, including the Ohtli Award from the Mexican government and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. This year, she was honored as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Women of the Year for the 20th century, and also honored by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last month as part of a special Women’s History Month celebration to highlight the contributions of women in history and contemporary society. In 2019, People For the American Way Foundation’s Young Elected Officials (YEO) Network awarded Huerta with its first Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2018, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill designating April 10 as Dolores Huerta Day.
