Washington, D.C.— Following this morning's questioning on the second day of the Senate Judiciary Committee's confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

"Amy Coney Barrett's answers to questions about the Affordable Care Act's future are entirely misleading.  She claimed that critical provisions of the law, such as the ban on lifetime caps for insurance coverage, are not at issue in the November 10 Supreme Court case she would hear if confirmed.  But the entire law is on the line, and if it is struck down completely, the ban on caps, the protections for preexisting conditions, and a raft of other protections will be eliminated.  Barrett has made it very clear in earlier writings that she disagrees with Court decisions that have upheld the ACA, so there is no mystery here: if she is confirmed, millions of Americans stand to lose their health insurance in the middle of a pandemic. And that means countless families are teetering on the brink of tragedy."
