Washington, DC — As the Senate returns to work this week, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“Our democracy is at risk, and the Senate must get back to work to confirm fair-minded judges on our lower courts, which are on the front lines when it comes to protecting our rights. So far, the Senate has confirmed 76 judicial nominees, 17 of whom are circuit court judges. The slowed pace on circuit courts puts President Joe Biden behind other presidents at this point in their presidencies, including Trump, George H. W. Bush, and Reagan. It is vital for the Senate to confirm as many of the 65 nominees in the pipeline as possible by the end of the year. It is gratifying that the Senate’s first vote when they reconvene this afternoon will be for one of the pending circuit court judges. But this focus must continue for the entire work period and into the lame duck session. It is a responsibility of all members of the Senate majority to make sure this happens to help ensure a fair-minded federal bench that is strong, diverse, committed to civil rights and upholding the rights of every American, not just the wealthy and powerful.”
