Washington D.C. – People For the American Way is pleased to announce that former Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes has joined the organization as a Senior Fellow. Barnes served as Lieutenant Governor from 2019 through 2023, Wisconsin’s first Black Lieutenant Governor. Most recently, he was Wisconsin’s Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate. Prior to statewide office, he served as a representative in the Wisconsin State Assembly. As Lt. Gov., he served as the chair of the Governor’s Task Force on Climate Change. Now, he is working to support other changemaking candidates with The Long Run PAC and has returned to his organizing roots as President of Power to the Polls Wisconsin. He is a fierce advocate for reproductive freedom, health care for all, and common-sense gun safety measures. He is also a longtime member of People For’s Young Elected Officials network.
“We are overjoyed to welcome Mandela Barnes as a Senior Fellow” said Svante Myrick, president of People For the American Way. “Mandela has always been part of the People For family and he represents the best that young leadership has to offer today. He is brilliant, courageous, and above all, dedicated to making government work to improve real people’s lives. We look forward to benefiting from his experience and commitment day in and day out as we embark on a critical year for our work and our democracy.”
“It’s an honor to be joining People For the American Way as a Senior Fellow,” said Mandela Barnes. “People For has always been there for me, and the community I have found there has supported me throughout my political career. People For’s work to strengthen our democracy has never been more important than it is now, and I look forward to supporting that effort. Millions of people are counting on People For and our allies to save our democracy this year, and we’re not going to let them down.”
