Washington D.C. – Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 8-1 decision in United States v Rahimi, upholding a prohibition on the possession of firearms by people who are subject to a domestic violence restraining order, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“The Supreme Court got it right in upholding a common-sense statute that nobody who is subject to a domestic violence restraining order should be allowed to have a gun. This was a no-brainer, but the reality is that this case should have never seen the light of day. The question of firearms for domestic abusers was only raised because of the Supreme Court’s disastrous 2022 ruling in the Bruen case, followed by an opinion by an extreme, ultraconservative 5th Circuit. We’re glad that the Court made a reasonable ruling today, but we can’t lose sight of the fact that far-right majorities on the Supreme Court and a lower court set the stage for what could have been a disaster. In fact, the majority of the Court made clear that they may well invalidate other gun safety rules under Bruen even after today’s decision. That’s why we have to keep courts in mind when we go to the polls in November.”
