WASHINGTON, DC—In response to today’s opening presentation by House impeachment managers and the Senate vote on the constitutionality of Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial, People For the American Way President Ben Jealous released the following statement:

“House impeachment managers today, led by Representative Jamie Raskin, made a powerful case for upholding the U.S. Constitution and provided the context necessary for why we must convict Trump. They also reminded the nation that consequences matter and no future presidents should be able to incite armed violence against the government of the United States. The principles of the constitution are meant to protect and defend democracy for all Americans. Let’s be clear, proceeding with this trial is constitutional. We are disappointed that most Republicans defied reason and their constitutional duty by voting to end the trial, but we are glad that the American people will get to see and hear the full story of the insurrection. Leadership accountability is essential for a healthy democracy and we believe that not holding Trump accountable would invite further abuse of power. Rep. Raskin was right: No January exception.”
