Washington DC/Chicago IL – People For the American Way and People For the American Way Foundation are excited to announce that Freeman’s | Hindman is offering a selection of limited-edition, contemporary prints in their upcoming auction, by renowned artists from the organizations’ collections.

This unique event, the first such auction of a portion of the organizations’ collections, is timed to highlight the organizations' efforts to protect our democratic institutions and elections. Proceeds will power People For the American Way's mission to preserve democracy, including efforts to get out the vote in this fall’s election.

Opportunities to bid online are available now on the Freeman’s | Hindman website and will culminate in a live auction on September 26 in the Chicago saleroom.

The pieces available are works by some of the greatest visual artists of the 20th century, including Ed Ruscha, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Indiana, Chuck Close, Richard Serra, and Cindy Sherman.

“We are literally ‘opening the vault’ to save democracy,” said Svante Myrick, president of People For the American Way and People For the American Way Foundation.“This is a time for every organization that cares about democracy to do everything in its power to save it, and we are fortunate that this is one of the things we can do. It’s more important to us right now to make this effort than it is to have this beautiful art hanging on our office walls.”

The Chicago auction hosted by Freeman’s | Hindman will be followed by a separate auction of additional works from the organizations’ collections at Sotheby’s New York on September 27.

From its founding by legendary TV producer Norman Lear in 1981, People For the American Way has enjoyed a close relationship with giants of the arts and entertainment world. A high-profile collaboration took place in the year after People For’s founding, when pop art pioneer Roy Lichtenstein volunteered to create an original work for the organization. His creation, “I Love Liberty,” began a long tradition of visual artists working with People For the American Way.

Since then, artists have partnered with the organization in numerous ways. In addition to creating works especially for the organization, they have donated works to help raise money to protect our democracy.
