Washington D.C. – Following the Supreme Court’s ruling today in Trump v United States, People For the American Way President Svante Myrick released the following statement:
“Today the far-right majority on the Supreme Court moved our country a step further toward authoritarianism in its ruling to provide unprecedented presidential immunity from prosecution. As Justice Sotomayor put it, this 'makes a mockery of the principle, foundational to our Constitution and system of Government, that no man is above the law.’
“The Court’s complicated formula for deciding which, if any, of Donald Trump’s egregious actions in trying to usurp election results are subject to prosecution gives Trump what he most wanted: an indefinite delay in a trial and accountability. Today the Court does immeasurable violence to the principle that nobody is above the law. As citizens, our best response is to take our horror – and our love for country -- to the ballot box in November, vote the courts, and reject the Trump-MAGA agenda that brought us to this incredibly dangerous moment for our democracy.”
