I urge the United States Senate to reject the nomination of Emil Bove to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Bove has a documented record of abusing his power to shield Donald Trump and retaliate against those who hold Trump accountable – including firing prosecutors and FBI agents investigating the January 6 insurrection and pressuring federal attorneys to drop corruption cases. He was also the subject of an internal investigation at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York for belittling coworkers, holding grudges, and exhibiting a short temper – leading to a recommendation that he be removed from leadership. His nomination is not about upholding the Constitution or the rule of law – it’s about enabling Trump’s agenda of revenge, corruption, and authoritarian control. The Senate must oppose this dangerous nominee.

Donald Trump has nominated his former personal defense attorney Emil Bove to a lifetime seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

This is an extraordinarily troubling nomination. Bove helped Trump carry out his vendetta against federal prosecutors and FBI agents involved in investigating the January 6 insurrection. He pressured federal attorneys to drop criminal charges against the mayor of New York in a way that made him susceptible to future prosecution if he didn’t sufficiently help Trump with his harsh immigration enforcement measures. His own DOJ colleagues resigned rather than carry out his unethical orders. He was also the subject of an internal investigation for mistreating colleagues, showing a volatile temper, and holding personal grudges – serious enough that SDNY leadership recommended he be removed from his position.

Even longtime conservatives and Federalist Society members are sounding the alarm – because this nomination is about raw loyalty to Trump, not the law.

The Senate must reject Emil Bove and send a clear message: our courts are not for political enforcers.
